Spell Catcher Plus Reviewed by: William Roehrs Spell Catcher is a system control panel, which adds an interactive spelling checker (it works as you type!), a full-featured thesaurus and a capability to attach to virtually any application, The Spell Catcher software includes the following:

• The Spell Catcher control panel, which makes Spell Catcher's menu and features available in any of your programs.
• The Spell Catcher Reference Sources folder, which provides the dictionaries, glossaries, and other ref­erences, is stored in your Spell Catcher Folder in your System Folder.
• These reference sources are sub­divided into main spelling dictionaries, supplementary spelling dictionaries such as Legal and Medical, and the thesaurus.
• Each of these reference sources is stored in a separate file, which Spell Catcher accesses as needed.

WHAT DOES SPELL CATCHER DO?

INTERACTIVE CHECKING Spell Catcher's interactive Checking option monitors every keystroke as you type; alerting you the instant it suspects an error. It watches for errors in spelling, capitalization, basic punctuation, and double words. The alert signal can be a computer-generated tone, a system beep sound, or a simple flash of the menu bar. When you receive an alert, you can ignore the error and keep typing, correct the error yourself, or get Spell Catcher to suggest an alternative spelling and make the correction. If Spell Catcher signals a spelling error for a word that is correct for your use, you can add that word to a supplementary dictionary so it will recognize it in the future.

CHECKING A SELECTION Spell Catcher also lets you check for errors in text that has already been typed. When you choose the Check Selected... command, Spell Catcher scans through all the text that is currently selected, alerting you to the same kinds of errors and giving you the same options as with Interactive Checking

THE THESAURUS Spell Catcher's thesaurus can show you definitions as well as synonyms, antonyms, and related, compared, and contrasted words for any word you type or select. In the thesaurus window, you can follow definition threads from one word to another, displaying entries until you find just the word you want. Then, simply double-click your final choice, and Spell Catcher automatically substitutes it for the word you originally looked up. I have been using the Spell Checker for several years when it was only available in the Mac format. Now I enjoy this program on my PC too. I never know how to spell everything so I would not be without it.
